ABSTRACT Title of dissertation: READING COMPREHENSION.
It was hypothesized that students who use reading comprehension strategies while reading retain more information and comprehend the text better. It was also hypothesized that students who have good reading comprehension skills perform better on reading.Mediation (IM) models of reading comprehension, the latter model based on an extensive literature review. It then tests the fit of four variations on the IM model. Ninth-grade studentst to 99th percentile on comprehension s ranging from 1 completed measures of background knowledge, inferencing, strategies, vocabulary, word reading and comprehension.Reading comprehension refers to whether or not a student understands a text that they have read. At higher levels, comprehending a text involves making inferences and understanding implicit ideas. Some students struggle with reading comprehension. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the research on reading comprehension, including the cognitive processes employed during comprehension of text, the cognitive deficits associated with poor comprehension, and the research-based characteristics of interventions for improving reading comprehension skills.Reading is a nonverbal communication that enriches ones greater understanding and vocabulary. In schools, knowledge and information in English have been acquired often by reading. It has been an outstanding skill in getting information through translation and understanding the written text from different reading materials.
Previous research has shown that students who lack sufficient reading skills, including decoding and vocabulary, fare poorly relative to their peers. However, this study suggests that a knowledge threshold may also be an essential component of reading comprehension.
